Track Crash Kills Dewald

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning for veteran Tiffin race driver Paul L. Dewald, 37, killed Saturday evening at Fremont Speedway.

According to Mrs. Dorothy Szakovits, the racetrack owner, Dewald was driving in the Super Modified consolation race when his car's accelerator apparently became stuck coming down a straightaway. The auto went out of control on the first turn, struck a retaining wall and came to rest on it's top on the road surdface after flipping over several times. His was the only car involved.

Dewald was rushed by ambulance to Fremont Memorial Hospital, but was dead on arrival there at 10:05 p. m.

Dr. Irving Koons, Sandusky County Coroner, said Mr. Dewald died of a fractured skull and cerebral hemorrhage.

Mr. Dewald, route 5, was born March 11, 1937, in Hopewell Twp., to Homer and Stella (King) Dewald. He married Patricia A. Gaster June 3, 1956, and she survives.

Also surviving are his mother, who resides on route 2; three sons, James A., David L., and Paul Gene, all at home; a brother, Donald Dewald, route 5; and a sister, Mrs. Franf (Mary Catherine) Lupton of Tiffin. A brother, Richard, is deceased.

A 1956 graduate of Hopewell-Loudon High School, Mr. Dewald was a member of Hopewell Church of God and Teamsters Local 20 in Fremont. He was a self-employed truck driver and leased to Wills Trucking of Toledo.

Visitation at the funeral home will be after seven o'clock tonight. The Paul L. Dewald Memorial Sports Fund has been set up, payable to the family or to the funeral home.

The Rev. Kenneth W. Heffner and the Rev. Richard Van Horn will conduct the services at 10 a. m. Tuesday in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sand Ridge Cemetery, Bascom.
