"Zip" took over the Calvert program in 1949 as the successor to the legendary "Wishy" Kramer. During his tenure the Senecas enjoyed 5 winning seasons. Zalar owns the longest winning streak of 13 straight games during the 1951-52 seasons. His entire career was marked by streaks of wins and losses in successions. One peculiar stat in the pre-overtime days was that through 9 seasons his teams did not record a single tie. He was also the head baseball coach for many years and he took great pride in seeing to it that the field was always well manicured.
